With over 17 years experience in web-based animation, Santa Fe-based web animator, Susan Preston, has nuts and bolts knowledge of what it takes to create effective Flash pieces. Whether you’re looking for a home page animation, an eye-catching web ad, an effective e-vite design for your upcoming conference or simply wish to send a thoughtful e-card, Webpoppy does it just right.

Susan Preston spent many years practicing piano as a child and her musical interest spilled over into her career. “Building an animation is much like writing a musical composition,” she says, “I work with a timeline in Flash, which is very similar to a musical staff. Pacing, including pauses and tempo, are important factors in both musical pieces and animation, which often utilizes music. Like any form of communication, Flash animation can be unskillfully implemented. Does everything need to whiz and buzz to be effective? Absolutely not. The question I ask myself before suggesting animation for a client’s website is, ‘Can I justify it?’ If there’s no real purpose for adding animation aside from grabbing someone’s attention, you risk driving traffic away. People don’t want to be bombarded with audio and imagery, but they do appreciate being given the information they’re looking for in useful ways which support instead of detract from a website’s Big Idea. Visually rich websites with strong images can definitely benefit from a well designed slideshow of Flash exhibit, which doesn’t require the user to do a lot of clicking and additional page loads. Educational material is also a good candidate. Animated content can demonstrate a whole page worth of written information in a simple, easy to digest format for your visitors… especially if they are visual thinkers.”
